How to Have Fun Teaching! - Teaching Tips, Suggestions & Ideas for Teachers

Here’s a simple, free downloadable spelling/blending game for 2-6 players, in which players have to blend two sounds together and practice ending vowel spellings.

Younger children who don’t know all the sound-spelling relationships can play on the same team as an adult or older child, who can tell them the sounds, and they can just use the game to practice their blending.

You just download the game as a five-page pdf file from www.spelfabet.com.au, print two A4 pages of cards (depending on what sort of printer and paper you have: coloured ones on white paper, or black-and-white ones on coloured paper), laminate them (optional, for durability) and cut them up into 36 cards.

To play, deal out the cards, build a word with two cards (a consonant and a vowel, e.g. ch + ew to make “chew”), then take turns creating a new word by putting a new card on top of one of the existing cards (e.g. put “n” on top of “ch” to make “new”).

The winner is the person who gets rid of all their cards first, or whoever has the fewest cards once nobody can make any more words.

The game includes an instructions page, if anything in this video is not clear.

This video show the cards in Comic Sans font but they are also available in Victorian Modern Cursive script. Get yours now at www.spelfabet.com.au/materials/bingo.
